Goal: Evaluate the feasibility of small-scale commercial shellfish aquaculture as a sustainable economic opportunity for coastal communities.
As wild shellfish populations declined and traditional fishing incomes fell, many coastal communities sought new ways to preserve their maritime heritage while supporting local livelihoods. TerrAqua evaluated the feasibility of developing a small-scale shellfish aquaculture industry in Southampton, New York.
The study assessed environmental, regulatory, policy, economic, and production issues affecting commercial aquaculture. We conducted a market assessment, developed cost-of-production models, and surveyed commercial fishermen, waterfront property owners, regulators, and other stakeholders to identify opportunities, concerns, and potential barriers to industry development.
TerrAqua also developed practical recommendations for aquaculture management areas, including designated nursery and grow-out zones that would improve productivity while minimizing conflicts with recreational boating, commercial fishing, and other coastal uses.
The study provided a roadmap for sustainable shellfish aquaculture development in Southampton and established a framework that can be adapted by other coastal communities seeking to diversify their economies while protecting environmental quality and preserving their maritime heritage.
